Certain positions remain a crucial point of improvement for FC Barcelona. The Catalan giants are aware that their team is not yet fully sorted and specific areas need further investment. While most of these can be covered through versatile alternatives, others are more tricky for Barcelona to sort.
While originally, the fullback positions were the ones where uncertainty was apparent, it now seems that Joao Cancelo’s permanent acquisition seems to be the agreed solution. However, the case of the pivot still remains quite open and inconclusive.
Oriol Romeu, signed in the summer from Girona, has hardly been a transformative signing. In fact, both Frenkie De Jong and Ilkay Gundogan have had to put in shifts to sort out that position for Xavi’s Barcelona. As such, new names for a possible future signing are consistently brought up.
According to Mundo Deportivo, the latest name added to this list is that of Amadou Onana. Aged 22, the Belgian player is primarily comfortable playing as a pivot or other midfield roles.
His explosion under the shade of Everton in the English Premier League has caught many eyes, including that of FC Barcelona. The Catalans have thus far collected good reports on him, and see him as a top candidate for future consideration.
Standing at almost two meters tall, the player accompanies his significant height with a strong physique. While his aerial game is strong naturally, he also adds other defensive elements. Interceptions, recoveries, and an extreme workrate are all assets that Onana possesses.
He is also technically quite gifted. A good range of passing is coupled with the ability to alter the control of the midfield. On paper, the 22-year-old Belgian seems to be the complete package. Moreover, other factors also seem to favor a possible move away from Everton.
This season, the Merseyside club has been sanctioned for certain breaches of regulations. Already hit with a 10-point deduction in the English Premier League, Everton face the realistic threat of relegation. In fact, the club is already preparing to offload certain top players in the scenario that it does get relegated.
Jordan Pickford, keeper for England, is one of those names and he is joined by Onana, interestingly. The young 22-year-old midfielder is undeniably a promising talent, and it remains to be seen just how serious the interest in him is from Barcelona.
