There are few names that manage to truly catch the eyes of FC Barcelona and other European giants. However, there are always those obscure names that emerge from time to time and grab all the spotlight for themselves. One such player, as far as interest from Barcelona goes at least, currently plays in the Netherlands.

The name of Mats Weiffer, aged 24, is one that must sound familiar to fans of La Blaugrana. This is due to the fact that the Dutch midfielder had been linked to Barcelona since quite a while. However, in recent weeks, any updates or information regarding his connection to Barcelona seemed to have faded away.

Now, on the other hand, a new update has indeed arrived. According to SPORT, Barcelona are gradually losing their position of potentially being able to sign Weiffer. The Dutch midfield star is gradually being lost to other possible suitors, with a side from La Liga leading the charge.

Weiffer, who Barcelona have been keeping an eye on, has the ability to play both as an interior and defensive midfielder. His versatility is accompanied by his undeniable technical ability.

Moreover, even the asking price set for him by the current side Feyenoord is much lower than what Barcelona may have to pay for other targets.

Valued at €18 million at the moment, his transfer fee would likely cost somewhere between €25-30 million. While, of course, these are simply estimates made by SPORT, the real value would not differ too much. However, even for that low price, Barcelona still can not make an advance.

This is because, rather unsurprisingly, financial fair play continues to haunt FC Barcelona. The Catalan club is still unsure of just how much salary space or spending allowance they will have in the summer. For this reason, Barcelona can only wait for now and can guarantee no promises.

Atletico Madrid, on the other hand, are delighted with this news. Being the aforementioned ‘side from La Liga’, they are currently leading the race.

They have already contacted Feyenoord for the potential signing of Weiffer as well. Until and unless the Blaugranes make a move, this talented Dutchman seems to be sailing away from Catalonia.
