The club’s midfield played an important part in the La Liga triumph for FC Barcelona this season. Among other names, Frenkie de Jong was one of the key parts of this midfield setup, and his performances made the difference for the club in a number of matches.
Owing to this importance of the Dutch midfielder to the team, FC Barcelona are looking to renew his contract. SPORT reports that the club will start working on this operation immediately, and the footballer himself is also fully committed to the club and its current project.
His current contract runs through to 2026, but the club will be looking to adjust his salary in this renewal to allow the club remain within the financial fair play wage limits. This contract will also add more years to his current contract, and would also help the club become financially more sustainable.
Last year, the club and the player went through a tense phase, as the board wanted to sell the player to Manchester United, in order to generate some much-needed funds, and shed some weight from its wage bill.
De Jong himself was not so keen for such a move, and felt that he was being unnecessarily pressured by the club into accepting the move to United. However, relations between the club and the player have improved in recent months, and De Jong himself has acknowledged his improved relations with Laporta and other directors.
The Dutch midfielder has been a key part of Xavi’s team this season, and the head coach himself sees him are an untouchable asset for the team. Being only 26 years of age right now, the club also believes in his potential for future growth, and want to tie him with the club for a significant period of time.
