It is known that Barcelona needs to raise funds this summer to comply with FFP and register new contracts for players, be it a renewal of their own players or potential new signings to strengthen the squad. Hence, there will surely be departures from the Catalan capital in the incoming window, but several players are reportedly among the untouchables.
Perhaps the best signing of last summer, Andreas Christensen arrived at Barcelona as a free agent from Chelsea and became immediately a crucial pillar in the heart of the Catalan defense.
Although it was expected to have several offers from England on the table for the Danish defender, the club considers that he is not for sale according to a recent report from SPORT.
The ex-Chelsea star has been a reliable presence in the center of Barca’s defense despite being affected by injuries, having a massive contribution with and without the ball as well, helping buildups with his excellent progressive passing abilities and defending with measured composure and firmness.
Thus, it is no surprise that Xavi Hernández really likes the defender, and would like to have him in the team for the future. The Catalan club’s intention is to extend his contract, and they already informed the player’s entourage that Christensen is non-transferable and the idea is to extend his contract beyond 2026.
The intention is to start talks next year over a possible renewal as the club believes that the 27-year-old Dane can be a leading figure of the defense for the years to come.
Barcelona knew that Premier League clubs are interested in acquiring the Dane’s services with a possible return to England. Newcastle and Aston Villa are among his admirers, but the player’s entourage already communicated that Christensen’s priority is to stay at FC Barcelona, where he feels fully integrated and comfortable.
In the current financial situation, Barcelona were tempted to listen to big-money offers for the 27-year-old as it would have benefitted a lot the club economically, but Xavi made it clear that the key cogs of the project – such as Christensen is considered – are untouchable.
