The undoubted priority of FC Barcelona remains to build a team that can compete at the highest level of European football next season without excuse, an objective echoed by Raphinha’s statement of wanting to conquer the UEFA Champions League next season.

To do so, the Catalans have concocted a plan that involves assembling a team full of not just quality but also reliable depth within its ranks. Consequently, the club has prioritized the signing of a particular midfielder from recent continental treble winners, Manchester City. However, there also exist certain hurdles down this path.

According to the recent update on Barca’s pursuit of German midfielder Ilkay Gundogan as provided by Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona are set to face stiff competition from the likes of English Premier League duo Manchester City and now Arsenal as well.

It is a well-documented fact that Gundogan’s contract runs out this summer at the end of June, after which the player is accessible as a free agent. Both his profile on a sporting level and the feasibility of a free transfer for the player are enticing factors for La Blaugrana, who are currently dealing with financial problems and thus have to settle for either low-cost acquisitions or free transfers.

As per the report, Mikel Arteta is also keen on the player, as those at Arsenal have begun to believe that he could prove to be a vital addition in their quest for a revolution at the club.

Having won the English Premier League several times already and now added the Champions League to his list of accolades as well, his experience and winning record are undeniably impressive and attract both the Gunners and interest from Barcelona.

The player was also asked explicitly regarding Barcelona’s interest, to which he replied that he found the city of Barcelona to be very beautiful. While not a guarantee, to many it implied a hint as to what his next destination just might be.

As it stands, Barcelona are reportedly inching closer and closer to acquiring the 32-year-old midfielder, whose quality and versatility suit Xavi Hernandez’s plans for next season.

With a three-year-deal on the table, it remains to be seen just how many more days it takes for Gundogan to make up his mind regarding where he wishes to play next season, although it appears that the option of the Bundesliga is now closed, as reports suggest Borussia Dortmund consider it unfeasible and the player himself has also closed that chapter.
