FC Barcelona clearly need to reinforce some positions in their squad before going into the next season. However, the wage bill makes it difficult for the club to make new signings, and despite the reductions achieved in this regard, more needs to be done to enable the club to sign new players.

The first priority of the club to achieve these reductions is selling some of its fringe players. However, this exit operation is not going exactly to plan, as the Blaugranes have not yet been able to sell any of their players in this transfer window.

Another option the club has up in its sleeve is that of wage deferrals. According to SPORT, FC Barcelona have been more successful in this aspect, as the goalkeeper Marc-Andre Ter Stegen is ready to defer a part of his wages that the club owes him till 30th June 2025.

The report mentions that this wage deferral will end with a contract extension for the goalkeeper, and while further details of this new contract are yet to be arrived at, this contract will likely bind the German with the club till 2028.

In addition to the chance of contract extension, Ter Stegen’s increased responsibility in the squad also spur him to make this sacrifice for the club at such a crucial time. With the departures of Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba, Ter Stegen is the second captain in the team now, and as Sergi Roberto does not have a fixed position in the line-up, the German would captain the side in most matches next season.

Keeping this role and responsibility in mind, the goalkeeper wants to set an example for the team and become an ideal captain for the club, both on and off the field. His sacrifice will definitely go a long way in helping the club, as it can facilitate the urgently required moves for Oriol Romeu and other such players that Xavi needs to compete in all competitions next season.
