The case of Barcelona in terms of their economic problems and financial limitations is well documented and many are already familiar with the rather extreme measures that the Catalan club has already had to take in the past to overcome these restrictions and the various problems that are associated with it.

Measures such as having to sell a significant percentage of rights of various assets has been a key lever that Barcelona had especially relied on last summer to be able to incorporate new signings and enable the club to once again become a competitive side under Xavi Hernandez.

However, the need to continue growing never stops and as a result, Barcelona have had to resort to yet another financial measure in a time of need. The measure in question is a contract extension with German goalkeeper and Barcelona captain Marc Andre Ter Stegen that would allow them to more easily register their players.

It would also allow Barcelona to more easily incorporate new signings as well. In terms of details, the extension will see Ter Stegen extend his stay at Barcelona until 2028 rather than the previous end date in 2025.

During this time, the goalkeeper will agree to defer his salary to the latter stages of his contracted years that would allow Barcelona more room to breathe in the present in an economic sense.

According to the Spanish program Partidazo COPE, Barcelona are hoping to announce this agreed contract extension before the end of the summer transfer window in a move that will likely benefit Barca’s operations this very summer in the remaining days of the window.

The contributions made by the German goalkeeper are those of a true Barcelona captain both on and off the field. With this agreement, he aids the club in their short-term pursuits and continues to be an aspiration for all those around him as he is expected to lead the team as the primary captain this season.

FC Barcelona are also hoping to negotiate a similar extension with another Barcelona captain, Frenkie De Jong. The Catalan club hopes that Ter Stegen’s initiative will help motivate other high earners to follow his example.
