One of the major dilemmas faced by Barcelona in recent times was to reinforce their squad in positions where they had lost important veterans. Chief among these positions was that of the pivot role, one where Barcelona practically possessed no outlets to depend upon.

During the course of the summer transfer window, there were several names that came up as potential targets. Martin Zubimendi of Real Sociedad was arguably the priority target for Barcelona and Xavi Hernandez, but due to his sizeable release clause and his unwillingness to leave Real Sociedad, the operation was not successful.

As a result, Barcelona ended up signing Oriol Romeu from Girona as a low-cost arrival who can handle the responsibility of the pivot position at least for the short term, given that he also has good experience with the Barcelona style of play having already been a part of La Masia in his early years.

Most recently, however, Barcelona have reportedly turned their head towards Celta Vigo midfielder Hugo Sotelo, according to Spanish outlet SPORT. The 19-year-old pivot currently plays for Celta on a subsidiary record and his recent contractual complications have alerted many top sides.

Reportedly, both Real Madrid and FC Barcelona are keeping a close eye on the development of the 19-year-old defensive midfielder. Barcelona consider him to be a potential bet for the long-term future given that his current release clause is set at €10 million as long as he remains on his subsidiary contract.

Having already impressed during pre-season, many of those around him were aware that he could prove to be vital for Celta this season. However, the player has recently rejected a first offer from Celta Vigo in regards to a contract renewal.

Contracted until 2025 with his current side, the player’s renewal is a major priority for Celta Vigo. The club is aware of the potential unfavorable scenarios that could arise if they are unable to tie down the young star for a longer period of time with top sides such as Barca and Madrid monitoring their negotiations in order to whisk him away.
