Two possible reasons why Xavi will renew only for a year at Barcelona

Ever since his appointment as the FC Barcelona head coach, Xavi Hernandez has been doing a good job. His performance has been particularly good, especially keeping in view the dearth of resources he has had to work with.

Xavi took over from Ronald Koeman, a dressing room that was suffering from several problems. The squad had been traumatized from its humiliations in Europe and also had only been able to win the Copa del Rey under the Dutch manager, which is not acceptable at all at a club of FC Barcelona’s stature.

Barcelona looking to extend Xavi’s contract

However, Xavi and Laporta’s administration has been able to get over most of these problems gradually.

The club has made significant progress towards its economic goals, and as previously reported here, has also refreshed its squad so that only a few players remain from the historic humiliations faced in Europe, while multiple high-quality players have been added.

Now, one of the tasks on the club’s hand is to ensure the long-term association of Xavi with Barcelona. The Catalans are already working on a contract renewal for the head coach, but there are reports suggesting that Xavi will renew his contract only for one year for now.

Xavi to get only a single-year extension

A report from SPORT addresses this concern and claims that a renewal till 2026 was never a serious option for the club. The report has given two reasons why Xavi will renew for only one year.

Firstly, a one-year extension will be better for Barcelona in the context of their delicate FFP situation.

Secondly, Xavi also wants a single-year extension as he does not want to put excessive burden on the club.

If Xavi’s performances remain up to the standards that he has shown up to now, his contract will be renewed once again. On the other hand, if the coach is unable to keep up his performance, it would be easier for both parties to part ways without any problems.
