FC Barcelona has already gone through several changes over the course of the summer transfer window. New arrivals have come into the club while several former stars have also either left permanently or temporarily to regain confidence and play more often.

Beyond just the football pitch, however, Barcelona has also made changes in their offices and in positions of power. One of these key changes was the appointment of former Barcelona player Deco as the club’s new Director of Football.

Changes in the hierarchy

This power was previously held by Mateu Alemany. During his time at the club, Alemany had been responsible for several key arrivals that shape the Barcelona squad of today. However, it was known for quite a while that following the end of the window in September, Alemany would be relieved of his duties and be replaced by Deco.

Atletico Madrid swooping in

Now, according to the latest update provided by COPE (h/t Barca Times), Alemany seems to be on his way to a new adventure. The report states that he is currently finalizing a deal to become the new Sporting Director of fellow La Liga outfit Atletico Madrid.

The Madrid-based outfit had reportedly been one of the clubs most interested in his signature since it had been revealed that he would part ways with La Blaugrana in September. For Los Colchoneros, the appointment of Alemany would come as a great boost given his history of signing great talents.

Alemany’s time in Barcelona

During Alemany’s time at Barcelona, the Director of Football signed several stars. Overall, the number of players signed during his tenure reached about 24. Several of these stars ended up becoming successful names while wearing the Blaugrana colors while others were less so.

Across this final transfer window, Mateu Alemany and Deco worked in unison to complete the signings that took place in the summer.

However, while there exist conflicting reports providing reasonings as to why Alemany and Barcelona parted ways, it is still safe to say that his time as Director of Football for the Catalan club was a highly fruitful period especially taking into consideration the significant economic restrictions.
