The different treatments of FC Barcelona and Real Madrid are becoming more and more clear with each passing game week. While not a direct insinuation or complaint towards a particular party, there is apparently a difference in how the rules apply to each team.
In their latest fixture against Granada in La Liga for matchday nine, FC Barcelona had to overcome a 2-0 deficit to almost complete a ‘Remontada’ by scoring a third goal through Joao Felix in additional time after the 90th-minute mark.
Controversial offside
However, that goal would be chalked off for offside. Interestingly, neither Joao Cancelo (the assist provider) nor Joao Felix (the goalscorer) were in an offside position. It was apparently Ferran Torres whose positioning resulted in the goal being chalked off despite him not even having come close to touching the ball.
The goal not counting would end up costing Barcelona two points as they would ultimately have to settle for a 2-2 draw and share the spoils with Granada. However, this incident has prompted SPORT to highlight how differently a similar situation went by when it involved a certain team dressed in white.
Real Madrid awarded a similar goal
Real Madrid took on Getafe at the Santiago Bernabeu for Matchday four of La Liga EA Sports. After going 1-0 down to the visitors, Madrid eventually got their equalizer in the 47th minute through Spanish striker Joselu, on loan from Espanyol.
However, during the build-up to the goal, Joselu was directly involved in interfering with Getafe defender Djene’s clearance while himself being in an offside position. A similar case to that of Ferran Torres but in this situation, Joselu himself ended up being the goalscorer with an entry that helped Madrid eventually win the game.
These disparities in the rules of the game are becoming more frequent and equally as frustrating. For now, the draw will cost Barcelona right before the international break. With 21 points to their name from nine games, Barcelona currently sit third in La Liga behind Girona (22 points) and Real Madrid (24 points).
