The state of FC Barcelona as a club has seen through turbulent tides in recent years. Despite the financial mismanagement, sporting disasters at times, and even internal problems, Barça has managed to prevail and continues to stand tall.

However, much of this new-found stability and progress can be attributed towards certain individuals. Chief among them is the man who planted this new revolution since his return, Joan Laporta. President of FC Barcelona as an institute, Laporta can be praised for much of the work being done within the club.

Following the conclusion of Josep Maria Bartomeu’s tenure as Barcelona President, Joan Laporta came through as an emerging candidate for the 2021 elections. Ultimately, the former Barça President would return to his seat having won by a majority of 54% of the votes over Toni Freixa (8.5%) and Victor Font (almost 30%).

While his current ongoing tenure is set to come to an end in 2026, Barcelona and Laporta may not permanently part ways by then. As highlighted by SPORT, Laporta has claimed in his recent speech to the Barcelona General Assembly that he could possibly run for the elections again in 2026:

“Legally, I could do it. As long as I can and I am able to, I will do it, and I will want to do it with this board because they strive, work, and are committed to the project. And then we’ll see. Ultimately, the President here is whoever the members want.”

Despite differentiated opinions continuing to exist, there is no denying that Laporta’s tenures have been fruitful. Barcelona arguably enjoyed its most successful period in the club’s history during his first tenure.

For now, the club continues to work in the present. While 2026 is still some time away, Laporta and his board’s accomplishments during the time between now and then could prove to be critical in deciding if it actually ends up being him who gets re-elected should he choose to run for presidency once more.
