From within the many corners of La Masia, Barcelona have managed to find yet another aspiring gem. While many come and go, lingering on about with the first team for some time and then being let go, there are those that catch the eye and continue to remain right there alongside the elite.
17 years of age, and Marc Guiu is already a name on the lips of many Barcelona fans. The young teenage sensation has already ensured that his stock skyrockets after the latest performance he’s put up against Athletic Bilbao, scoring the game’s only goal in the dying embers.
Brought on by Xavi in the 79th minute to add some offensive flare to the Barcelona team, he did not take long to make his mark. 33 seconds after coming onto the pitch, Guiu had the ball nestling in the back of the net.
Courtesy of a great initial through ball by Joao Felix, Marc Guiu took one simple touch while running to set up the ball for himself and then let loose a powerful strike that bypassed Unai Simon and wrecked the Bilbao goal.
A pure product of La Masia, Guiu officially becomes the third fastest player in La Liga history to score on their debut as per MisterChip (Alexis). Having been with the club since a very young age, Guiu’s original season of joining Barcelona was 2013/14.
Having previously featured for various Barcelona youth and subsidiary sides, the young striker was awaiting a chance with the first team. His initial call-ups came during the Barcelona pre-season. However, due to Robert Lewandowski’s untimely injury, he has now recently received regular first-team call-ups.
Yet, it was just mere hours ago against Bilbao that he got to make his official debut. Scoring as well just moments after coming on, Guiu was ecstatic. Following the game, he even exclaimed:
“I can’t believe it. I’m enjoying the moment. I’ve been working all my life for this opportunity and it turned out perfect.”
Furthermore, even Xavi shared an interesting bit of information. Prior to sending him on, the Barcelona coach stated that he already had told Guiu to remain on his toes when his golden opportunity arrives:
“I told Marc Guiu that he’ll have the chance to score and that he needs to take it. In the end, that’s exactly what he did.”
This goal now puts Guiu under the spotlight already at such a young age. However, if tonight was anything to go by, the aspiring young striker is only just getting started. His intent seems to be clear about helping Barcelona move forward.
With the club of a faithful coach and a talented side around him, it will be quite an interesting ride to see how well Guiu can progress from today onwards.
