The Catalan giants from Barcelona are currently working on improving their squad in various ways. One of their primary concerns this season remains the central defensive midfield position.

Previously occupied by the great Sergio Busquets, Barcelona have had quite the trouble finding an adequate heir.

One of the many shortlisted candidates that they had in the summer was Joshua Kimmich. The German midfielder was not enjoying the best of times with Bayern Munich and hence had Barcelona interested.

Ultimately, however, the interest could not amount to much as Barça were simply unable to match Bayern’s demands for their star midfielder.

Tensions in Bavaria

Now, it seems that the saga may still have life to it. According to Mundo Deportivo, Kimmich seems unlikely to continue with Bayern Munich. As per the update, the 28-year-old midfielder is unlikely to sign a contract renewal with the Bavarian giants this year.

With his current contract ending in 2025, it seems that the player currently has no intentions of staying past that point in Munich.

Moreover, the report further elaborates that the player has several issues with the club. Sporting doubts remain a primary problem, as earlier reports even suggested that Kimmich was among the players most frustrated by the departure of Julian Nagelsmann.

Barcelona remains an option

Uncomfortable at the moment, Kimmich could look towards other alternatives to join. As it stands, the report claims that FC Barcelona could be among those clubs.

The player has previously stated his admiration for Xavi Hernandez publicly, and playing under his idol could prove to be a potential attraction for the German midfielder.

However, Barcelona will likely face stiff competition from other European juggernauts. According to the report, both Real Madrid and Manchester City could also be viable options for Joshua Kimmich.

In the scenario that a possible opening is found by Barça, La Blaugrana will need to act quickly. Unable to compete on a financial level with the other top clubs at the moment, Barcelona must take any advantage they can get.
