The winter transfer window is approaching fast, but FC Barcelona have only a limited number of operations under consideration to undertake in this window. The economic realities of the club have limited their aspirations for this window, but the Catalans still have some urgent reinforcements required to be made.

Two of the operations that are of high priority for Barcelona in the winter are the incorporation of Vitor Roque and the re-registration of Gavi, keeping in view he is still only registered because of a precautionary court order.

Barcelona considering prioritising a midfield pivot in winter

However, according to a new report from SPORT, the plans of the Catalan club for the upcoming window can undergo a change, as Barcelona are now looking for a good, nice, and cheap midfield pivot to be incorporated in January.

The report goes on to claim that Barcelona are now considering prioritizing the arrival of such a midfielder even ahead of Vitor Roque. There are already enough forwards at Xavi’s disposal for the second half of the season, with Ferran Torres, Raphinha, Lamine Yamal, Robert Lewandowski, and Joao Felix all performing at a good level.

On the other hand, Romeu is the only midfielder who specializes in playing at the pivot position in the squad, and Gundogan and Gavi are not the most comfortable in such a role. Thus, preferring a midfielder in the winter makes sense for Barcelona.

Pursuing a midfielder makes sense for Barcelona

There are further factors that can make Barcelona prioritize a midfielder ahead of Roque. For instance, registering Roque would require around €13-14 million in fair play for Barcelona, while a pivot bought with a low amount or on loan will require a significantly smaller sum in this aspect.

Barcelona also believes that they will need a player capable of managing transitions and having the legs to perform in the physically demanding matches that the club will play in the second half of the season, especially in the Champions League.

For now, Barcelona are not in favor of getting a player on loan, and a full transfer is the most likely solution for the club. However, getting a top-class player in the winter window will be difficult, not only because of the economic difficulties of the club but also because clubs and players may not want such a significant change in the middle of the season.
