With the departure of Sergio Busquets last summer, Sergi Roberto is now the player who has been playing in the FC Barcelona first team for the longest period of time. The midfielder has completed 14 seasons at the club since his debut, but his current contract ends at the conclusion of this season.

Earlier reports on this subject indicated that the player’s time at Barcelona was almost up, as Xavi Hernandez, his main supporter at the club, is leaving at the end of the season.

However, SPORT now reports that Barcelona decision-makers are actually satisfied with Roberto’s performances, and he is highly valued by the club, particularly for his contributions on the pitch, his role in keeping the locker room together, and helping the club by accepting lower wages.

Thus, Barcelona do not completely rule out a renewal for him, but his continuity at the club will be determined by the preference of the coach that replaces Xavi on the Barcelona bench.

If the next coach wants him, the midfielder will be open to a renewal, but if he is not the coach’s plans, he will consider joining another side, and thus will not be a problem for his beloved club.

The Barcelona captain is attracted by the prospects of playing in the MLS in the future, but currently, at 32 years of age, he believes the time for this has not yet come. Thus, he wants to keep playing at the highest level for some years to come.

While Busquets is being missed a lot on the pitch, Roberto has done very well to ensure the former captain’s leadership is not missed in the locker room. He is in complete harmony with the other captains, and also encourages and guides the group of young talents who have made their way to the first team.

Currently out with injury, Sergi Roberto can return to action in the upcoming match against Celta de Vigo. This season, he has made 14 appearances with Barcelona, scoring three goals and providing one assist.
