Barcelona set to pocket €8 million due to former defender’s sale

FC Barcelona continue to work tirelessly as they look to sort things out before the summer ends. This transfer window has given them the chance to both acquire and sell unwanted players, and the latter objective seems to be the immediate priority. For Barcelona, it is equally important to create financial space as it is to acquire new players.

However, it is also proving to be an equally difficult task to accomplish as well. Not many of Barça’s players have the inclination to leave the Catalan giants at this point, and especially those that still have a sizeable market seem to be hellbent on staying. Yet, from some external transfers, the club is at least generating some future revenue.

According to Mundo Deportivo, the official West Ham United sources have confirmed the transfer of French defender Jean-Clair Todibo. The 24-year-old OGC Nice defender will be transferred initially as a loaned player but that deal will end with a mandatory €40 million purchase clause.

Formerly a Barcelona player, Todibo’s transfer to Nice gave Barça access to €8.5 million as well as 20% rights on any future sale of his. With that sale now being guaranteed, the Catalan club will reportedly pocket €8 million after a year. This would mean that, in total, Todibo’s exit from Barcelona has earned the club €16.5 million.

Considering the fact that he was acquired by Barça in 2019 for just €1 million, and then his loans to other clubs themselves earned Barcelona more than twice that amount, Todibo has been a great financial asset to the club.

With this €16.5 million piled on top of that now, it is easy to say he has been one of the best business-based deals La Blaugrana have conducted in quite some time. Other deals may have been a hit or miss, but the Frenchman has been a financial jackpot for the club.

Moreover, as it stands, it seems that Barça could get their hands on some more financial injections this summer as well. Julian Araujo, one of the club’s fullbacks, could also be transferred to a certain Premier League club for an amount that could hover in the €10 million region at some point this summer.
