The pending truth that Barcelona or Athletic Club must endure

The summer transfer window has been one of a lot of ups and downs for FC Barcelona. La Blaugrana wanted to finally make a team that can compete on all fronts, but their recent progression has been rather worrying. After all, for Barcelona to lose the Joan Gamper trophy is a big warning sign of its own.

With that defeat comes a new sense of urgency and a case of the club needing to improve. The official La Liga season is not too far away anymore, and Barcelona will need to be prepared for it to the best of their abilities. Unfortunately, there is still one specific transfer operation that will dictate the fortune of two clubs before the end of August that needs to be solved.

As pointed out by Javier Miguel, the Nico Williams saga is still not exactly over. However, the final decision that comes out of it by the end of the summer will help one of either Barcelona or Athletic Club, while the other gets to face the blunt hit of realization that could possibly turn the club’s reputation into that of a joke.

It all truly kicked off when Barcelona president Joan Laporta even publicly admitted to the club being able to sign a player like Nico Williams, and then saw Athletic Club retaliate. As time has passed since, the Basque club continues to make the player film footage and make him standout as their most valued player in light of Barça’s transfer interest.

For La Blaugrana, however, all these gestures from their fellow La Liga side are nothing but show. They continue to believe that the player is being forced to make such content for the club and that the true reality of his future is still up for grabs, despite the fact that Barcelona themselves have alternatives lined up.

This rollercoaster of a transfer saga has pretty much covered every trick in the book. Barcelona have gone from reportedly having the player’s ‘yes’ to now admitting that the operation seems rather complicated. Moreover, even Joan Laporta himself took over the operation from Deco considering that the latter seemed to be making no progress in his eyes.

Alas, this soap opera will fortunately come to an end soon. By this point, many are less concerned with the outcome and more hopeful about it simply seeing it find its conclusion. For Barcelona specifically, the cons of losing out on Nico Williams this summer are about more than just the sporting possibilities being missed out on.
