Barcelona still have one player whose transfer could open up doors

This summer transfer window will force FC Barcelona to make some less-than-ideal decisions. As it stands, La Blaugrana are already thinking of letting go of one of their midfielders for free as well. Unfortunately, that specific Barcelona star may not be the last one who ends up being transferred away either.

The player in question was Ilkay Gundogan, whose departure to Manchester City now seems imminent. However, the reason behind this operation not including a transfer fee is just so that Barça can get his salary off their books and they can use it to register players like Dani Olmo before diving back into the market.

According to AS, however, there is another player at Barcelona who could unlock new possibilities through a potential sale. That player would be 28-year-old Danish defender Andreas Christensen, who is not seen as much of a sporting guarantee at the club as he was last season or the one before.

The former Chelsea defender arrived as a free transfer, and that means that any sale would mean complete net profit for the club in terms of their financial records. Moreover, it has been clear to see under Hansi Flick that Christensen has been the secondary choice to fill in for others rather than play as a guaranteed starter.

In the defense, players like Pau Cubarsi, Inigo Martinez, Ronald Araujo, and Jules Kounde all seem to be ahead of him and have overshadowed his presence. Over in the midfield, the development of various youngsters such as Marc Bernal and Marc Casado, as well as the imminent returns of players like Frenkie de Jong and even Gavi, could end Christensen’s sense of stability as a defensive midfielder as well.

Thus, offloading the player could bring a big financial benefit to Barcelona. Previously, it was reported that Premier League side Newcastle United may be interested in his services, given that he has former experience in the English First Division and his profile could be of use to teams in the league.

With both a strong club resume and one with his National team, Andreas Christensen remains a player with a good market. In case a good enough offer arrives, it may not hurt Barcelona to offload the player if it enables them to return to the market with a lot more financial firepower backing them up.
