Several interesting midfield options could open up for Barcelona next year

The 2024 summer transfer window has only just closed, but the top European clubs are already planning for their moves in the next summer transfer window. This is also the case at FC Barcelona, which will be looking to reinforce one specific position in their squad, the midfield pivot.

Despite this being a clear weakness in the squad, the Blaugranes were unable to land any specialist midfield pivot in the last summer transfer window. They were linked with the likes of Joshua Kimmich and Mikel Merino, but neither of them joined Flick’s squad.

However, with the completion of the renovation of Camp Nou, Barcelona’s finances are expected to improve significantly next year, and, as SPORT has noted, they will have several interesting options available in the market to reinforce this position.

Joshua Kimmich will once again be a highly appetizing target for the Catalans, as he still has not renewed his contract with Bayern Munich and can be incorporated for free next year. Flick will be particularly delighted to have the German back under his orders, after having managed him during his time at Bayern and the German national team.

Another option from Bayern Munich that can attract Barcelona’s interest is Leon Goretzka, who also has not renewed his contract which ends in 2026. If a renewal agreement is not reached, Bayern might look to sell him next summer to avoid losing him for free. Flick will also be very happy to have him in his squad.

Fabian Ruiz is another name that Barcelona have in their mind, especially as he is no longer an automatic starter for Luis Enrique since the arrival of Joao Neves. Real Madrid can also make an effort to sign him, but Barcelona still have his name under consideration.

To finance a move for any of these players, Barcelona can decide to part ways with one of their current midfielders, Frenkie de Jong. The Dutchman came close to leaving Barcelona in recent years, and his relationship with Joan Laporta’s board has deteriorated considerably in the last two years. His injury problems have also been a concern, and thus can be sold by the Catalans.
