The 5-1 win that FC Barcelona got over Villarreal last night is proving to be a pyrrhic victory for the Blaugranes. Although it was a great showing, with goals coming thick and fast, they saw their captain and goalkeeper leave the pitch at the end of the first half in visible anguish and pain.

Ter Stegen’s expressions right after the injury made it clear that this is not a simple issue, and can have great implications for him. Later tests on the goalkeeper revealed that he had torn his patellar tendon and could remain out for several months.

The latest updates on the German shot-stopper’s situation have been provided by Mundo Deportivo, which claims that Ter Stegen is set to undergo surgery today, on Monday, afternoon. The report further mentions that his right leg’s patellar tendon is completely torn, and the goalkeeper does not want to waste any time to start his recovery process.

FC Barcelona have also confirmed in an official statement that the goalkeeper will undergo surgery today, and the club will provide another update once the medical intervention has been completed.

With his surgery, Ter Stegen is set to remain on the sidelines for the next seven to eight months, and thus he will have to say goodbye to almost the entirety of this season.

After the injury, the German undertook his first tests at the Vithas Castellon Hospital, as he was transferred there from La Ceramica as the second half of the game between Barcelona and Villarreal took place. He later returned to Barcelona by road separately from the team in a wheelchair, with his right leg raised.

More tests were undertaken on him at the medical center at the Ciutat Esportiva this morning, and the decision to undertake the surgery was finally made keeping in view the situation of his leg.
