After being linked with FC Barcelona for the past few days, Wojciech Szczesny is now officially a Blaugrana player, as the club has announced his signing.

The Pole has returned from retirement after having played for some of the biggest sides in Europe. Juventus was the last club he represented, but he had also played for other big clubs like Arsenal and Roma.

Things took an unexpected turn for him with Marc-Andre Ter Stegen’s injury, as Barcelona were allowed to replace the German with another player, but with the condition that they could only sign a player who was not employed with any other side.

Thus, circumstances made him one of the favorites of the Catalan club, and he is already working to get back to his best and get ready to take his place between the sticks for Hansi Flick.

As Mundo Deportivo has reported, the Pole talked to the club’s media and expressed his surprise and amazement at the way things had turned out in the last few days: “I need some time to understand what happened last week. The whole situation surprised me a lot, including my final decision.”

“If you had asked me the day before Ter Stegen got injured if I would return to football, I’m sure I would have said that there were no conditions that would make it happen. And a week later, here we are enjoying the Catalan sun.”

“In life, I try not to believe in destiny. If Ter Stegen’s injury had occurred when the transfer window was open, I wouldn’t have come here. If it had happened two weeks later, I also wouldn’t have come here because it would have been too late, and I wouldn’t have gotten off the couch.”

“This was my last chance to prepare to play at a high level. I believe it must have been written in the stars somewhere.”

There is no doubt that the events of the last few days were rather unexpected. Before Ter Stegen’s injury, no one could have imagined that a goalkeeper that has already retired will be playing for Barcelona, but this signing goes on to show how unpredictable life and football can be, even in a positive way.
