Hansi Flick’s upcoming midfield dilemma at Barcelona could be interesting

This current Barcelona team, led by Hansi Flick, is one of the most in-form sides across European football. Due to the high-intensity football that they play, they are also a joy to watch this season. However, what really makes this Barcelona team a dangerous side is their effectiveness in terms of execution.

Through a combination of both chemistry and individual quality, Barça’s head coach has enabled this team to effectively make the most out of everything. A team full of talented stars across each position on the pitch, it is also one that is relentless as a unit.

However, Hansi Flick still may have a positive dilemma to address moving forward. That particular dilemma will likely revolve around the midfield, as highlighted by SPORT, and it will become a real headache for the German coach to address once all of his injured midfielders make their return.

With Dutch star Frenkie de Jong already back, Hansi Flick already has his first problem to solve. Where exactly the Dutchman fits best into this team remains a complete mystery for now, but it is suspected that the role of a defensive midfielder is the one that will most likely be given to him.

Unfortunately, that may not be the position in which he best serves his purpose according to his own best qualities. That would be one in which he gets to have the ability to drive forward as much as possible, but there are already players within this Barcelona team that are expected to serve that purpose.

Both Pedri and Dani Olmo, for instance, are clear examples of this. Without a doubt, as SPORT highlights as well, Olmo’s presence as the attacking midfielder of this Barcelona team is usually when the side is most effective and fluid in attack. Similarly, Pedri also offers a very effective option in that same role.

However, the option of Fermin Lopez also continues to exist as a direct replacement for Dani Olmo in that advanced role. His long-shot-taking ability, coupled with his more tenacious tendencies, make him a more aggressive alternative to the other attacking midfielders in the team.

Even Gavi is expected to return from injury soon, and his role as a defensive midfielder could already be on the table. Hansi Flick is already excited to see him back on the pitch once he fully recovers, but Gavi’s entry could spell some bad news for either Marc Casado or De Jong when it comes to a starting position in the team.

As for Casado himself, he remains the only natural defensive midfielder in the team currently following Marc Bernal’s injury. His workrate and commitment has been excellent so far, and it seems like Hansi Flick will not stop depending on him to continue delivering for the team as he has done so far even when other options become available again.
