Rights on their former defender unlikely to benefit Barcelona any time soon

In the last few years, it has not been uncommon for FC Barcelona to allow some of their young players to leave, while keeping several stipulations in their contracts that keep them associated with themselves.

Thus, the Blaugranes have a right to some percentage of any future fee paid, a repurchase agreement, or a right of first refusal for several footballers playing across Europe.

One such player is the defender Oscar Mingueza, who is currently playing at the La Liga side, Celta Vigo. The La Masia graduate has been playing at a very high level with Vigo since the start of this season and has already registered two goals and four assists in only eight appearances.

With such performances, his market valuation has increased up to €12 million, which could have clearly benefitted the Catalans as the Celta Director of Football recently confirmed that Barcelona have a right to first refusal and a 50% share of a sale on the player.

However, as SPORT has noted, the Blaugranes are quite unlikely to benefit from this increase in valuation and the right to a 50% share of the transfer fee, as Celta Vigo have no plans to part ways with the defender.

The Celta Vigo President was quite clear in this regard, as he commented on Mingueza:

“Marco Garcés (Celta Vigo Director of Football) is the one managing the renewal agenda. Mingueza is happy here, and we are happy with him; it’s a matter of sitting down when the time is right.”

“That Barcelona has a percentage of a sale is something usual; it doesn’t only happen with Mingueza, and it’s becoming more common every day. It neither limits us nor favors us, nor does it take away from us. What we want is for him to be here for a long time.”

Similarly, Mingueza was also clear that he wants to continue playing at Celta Vigo as he talked to the media about a month ago. Thus, Barcelona will have to wait to take advantage of the various rights they have on the defender.
