It seems that a long journey finally comes to an end for a certain veteran of FC Barcelona. Many legends and club veterans have left in recent years, and most departures have been rather heartbreaking to see. This time around, however, the Barcelona player in question has had a mixed reception to his career at the club.
The man being talked about is none other than Sergi Roberto, the 32-year-old versatile Spanish midfielder who is already without a contract and expected to leave Barcelona this summer for a new chapter in his career. As it stands, he will reportedly have a farewell of sorts on Tuesday.
However, his time at Barça has hardly been one littered with nothing but success. While he has had his fair bit of success, Roberto has never truly been one of the team’s standout performers on a consistent basis even though he was the most recent first team captain. Yet, his recent social media post has received a comment that rekindles the true value of what Roberto did for Barcelona.
As highlighted by Barça Times, former Barcelona manager and club icon Xavi Hernandez was among the people who commented on Roberto’s recent farewell post, and his words mainly look to compliment the midfielder’s exemplary character:
“An example for everyone.”
While it is true that Roberto was not exactly a technically world class player, he was a diligent and loyal servant to the club. His commitment to Barcelona was always absolute and he was there to serve his club and coach as per their requirements in any position that they wanted him to play in.
With Xavi specifically, Roberto got to spend five years at the club between 2010 and 2015. After that point, the two would be reunited once again but this time with new roles and designations. Xavi, during his time as Barça coach, was once again united with his teammate who also came through La Masia.
Moving forward, however, there is not much known about Roberto’s future. The Spaniard does reportedly have offers on the table but he has not picked a destination just yet. Only time will tell what the future has in store for the midfielder finally parting ways with his childhood club.
