Barca vs Villarreal: Xavi’s pre-match press conference

Xavi on Barca’s 2021-2022 campaign:

“I think this season could’ve been worse but we have evolved and competed well. I told the players to have belief but we didn’t do enough. We have also been knocked out of tournaments, it wasn’t a great season but we have gotten better.”

Xavi on the last game of the season:

“We want to get a good result and play a good match against Villarreal. We want to end the season on a good note. Villarreal is one of the toughest teams we’ve faced this season in La Liga.”

Xavi on the economic situation and new signings:

“I spoke with the president and he is confident that we can strengthen the team. It all depends on the economic circumstance but we will see what we can do. I’m not the one authorized to talk about money matters, let’s talk about football.”

Xavi on Mbappé:

“I don’t know, talk to me about Barça. In general, the decision is up to Mbappé and we have nothing to do with the matter.”

Xavi on exits in the summer transfer window:

“I spoke with some players about their exit. I spoke with 4 or 5 players about our plans for the future and the decisions that we have made.”

Xavi on not signing Haaland:

“Laporta said we cannot pay for players like Mbappé and Haaland? The president has been clear about the matter. We wanted to be in the race to sign them, but the financial situation did not permit it.”

Xavi on Lewandowski:

“Lewandowski is one of the players who can come to Barca. Lewandowski has already said this publicly. There are negotiations but it will not be easy. He has another year on the contract.”

Xavi on Dembele’s continuity:

“It might be Dembélé’s last match with Barcelona or he might continue with the team. I am optimistic and I hope he continues. He’s been fantastic in many matches, and I really like him.”

Xavi on his meetings with some players:

“Yes, Mingueza, Braithwaite, Puig, and Umtiti are among other players to whom I spoke about their future but I will not disclose the conversation between us.”

Xavi on Frenkie’s Future:

“We will come back to the topic of the economic situation. I told Frenkie that he can create an era at the club. I admire him and he is a player who can control the game. Once again we’ll talk about money and I don’t want to talk about money.”

Xavi on Marcos Alonso and Inigo Martinez being linked with Barca:

“There are undoubtedly many names, we are looking for multiple players for the team.”

Xavi on UWCL Final:

“I wish the Femini team the best, I will watch the match from home and I hope they win the title. Lyon is a tough team, but I hope we can win it.”

That concluded Xavi’s press conference.
