FC Barcelona dismantled Deportivo Alaves 3-0 over the weekend, with Robert Lewandowski netting a hat-trick. Raphinha played a pivotal role, providing two assists for the Polish striker. However, their attacking partner-in-crime, Lamine Yamal, had a relatively quiet night.
The 17-year-old Barcelona ace was substituted on the night for Ansu Fati around the hour mark. Lamine Yamal did not look happy after going off against Alaves and was seen being consoled by Hector Fort on the bench.
Everyone presumed the reaction to be towards Hansi Flick who had taken him off early for the second successive game, something that Lamine is not used to, so far this season. Against Alaves, despite his moments of brilliance, the teenager was not his usual, dominating self.
This could have prompted Flick’s decision to take him off. Lamine has now come out and explained his reaction towards the substitution as quoted by Mundo Deportivo. Here is what he had to say:
“He asked me why I was like that, whether it was because of the substitution or my performance. I told him I could have helped the team and that I would be at 100% for the next game. He is very close to everyone, whether they play more or less, veterans included, and he gives a lot of confidence, which shows in the team.”
Lamine’s words reflect his remarkable ambition for a 17-year-old. While most players his age would be content with the opportunity to play for the first team regularly, the Barcelona teenager recognizes his potential and aims even higher.
At such a young age, Lamine Yamal is already one of the most important players for both the club and the country. What he has managed to achieve, both for Barcelona and Spain in the Euros is unprecedented. He hardly has off days which might have prompted his reaction against Alaves.
Lamine is currently on international duty with Spain where he will face Denmark and Serbia in the Nations League. It remains to be seen how he performs for La Roja and one can only hope the 17-year-old comes back in top form for the important games against Bayern and Real Madrid.
