Barcelona have in the past few years had to make a plethora of difficult decisions that have in one way or another jeopardized or tainted the club’s future in return for short-term sustainability.
Among those various decisions were the infamous cases of Lionel Messi having to bid farewell to the club of his dreams, various players in the side having to agree to wage reductions, and others having to come to a consensus with Barcelona to defer wages to a later year.
If emerging reports are to be believed, it is the latter that has most recently come to haunt Barcelona in the present time. According to the report by Mundo Deportivo that primarily focuses on this topic, it was the salary deferral agreed with French defender Samuel Umtiti that has now come to be a hassle to deal with for FC Barcelona.
During the winter transfer window of January 2022, Barcelona agreed to a contract extension with the French defender that would see them allocate his salary in divisions to him over a longer duration than the 2023 deadline of his previous contract. Through this strategic extension, the registration of then new signing Ferran Torres also became possible.
At the time, the move was a massive favor from the side of Samuel Umtiti towards Barcelona, as it involved no additional financial benefit to him and simply consisted of his own contracted salary being given back to him at a pace that benefited FC Barcelona.
However, as the club now looks to offload him with the letter of freedom and shift his responsibilities to another club altogether, Samuel Umtiti is reportedly not in agreement with this idea. Believing that he has done his part for the club, his rightful compensation is still due.
This point of contention between the two parties must be resolved quickly if Barcelona still wish to offload the Frenchman sooner rather than later. Having recently ended a successful loan spell with Italian side Lecce, Barcelona continue the hunt to find a side willing to take the 29-year-old defender and commit to his financial demands.
