Although FC Barcelona have a surplus of defenders for the center of the defense, their options on the flanks are quite limited in this squad. For instance, Alejandro Balde is the starter at the left-back position, but his replacement is Gerard Martin, who is only in his first season with the first team.

Similarly, on the other flank, where Jules Kounde has been playing at a very high level since the start of this season even though he is naturally a center-back, the Frenchman’s replacement is only Hector Fort, another rather inexperienced option.

In such a context, any upcoming market options in the coming transfer windows might seduce Barcelona to sign a fullback. According to a report from Fichajes, just such a scenario is taking place for the Blaugranes as they report them to be now one of the contenders for the Liverpool fullback, Trent Alexander-Arnold.

The €70m-rated Englishman is one of the best fullbacks in the world at this moment, and the fact that his contract with Liverpool is expiring at the end of the season makes him one of the most alluring targets for the big clubs across Europe.

Barcelona’s arch-rivals, Real Madrid, have been the side with the strongest links to the England international, but Fichajes reports that two other clubs have now entered the battle for his signature, Barcelona and Bayern Munich.

Meanwhile, Liverpool are also trying their best to ensure the 26-year-old right-back remains in their team beyond this season, as losing such an important player will be a significant blow to any club. The Premier League side has been negotiating a renewal with the player, but there are still no signs of an agreement.

Thus, in January, the player will be open to negotiating with other clubs. But even if this story is to be believed, their limited salary margin will make it very difficult for Barcelona to compete with these two European giants, especially keeping in view the fact that they also have to get Dani Olmo and Pau Victor registered again in January.
