FC Barcelona have been quite clear about their objectives within the club. Due to their financial limitations and restrictions, the Catalan club cannot exactly waltz into the transfer market and pick whatever player they wish to acquire. Instead, the reality for Barcelona is one that requires them to be much more careful with their signings.

For that reason, La Blaugrana have mainly focused on acquiring players that would be considered essential or desperately needed at the club. Luxury signings, on the other hand, have been sidelined for now as Barcelona simply does not believe such acquisitions to be worth the effort right now.

However, there are times when luxury and necessity can end up coexisting. In recent weeks, following the rather disappointing performances of Robert Lewandowski, doubts about the Pole’s reliability as a scoring outlet heading into next season have increased.

While the signing of an elite striker in the summer may not have been a priority before, SPORT now reports that Barcelona are considering that possibility now. Knowing that if the player cannot deliver at the highest level, they need someone who can and also do it consistently.

Moreover, Lewandowski is already 37 years old, and also commands one of the largest salaries within the squad. Previously, the idea was to pursue a low-cost operation that would involve a relatively younger player who would not mind playing as a secondary option to Lewandowski due to his fine scoring form.

One option for this was Jonathan David from Ligue 1 side Lille, but even that option seems to have faded away. The Catalan giants believe that some aspects of his profile do not align with what Barcelona needed, and that despite being a free agent, the operation involving him would have been quite costly.

On the other hand, elite options such as Viktor Gyokeres from Sporting CP, or even others such as Darwin Nunez from Liverpool and Victor Osimhen from Napoli, are all possible options to be considered. Even Erling Haaland, someone who may seem out of reach for now, could end up becoming an option if Manchester City’s rather disastrous run of form continues and impact their standings at the end of the season.

However, there is still a lot of time left before the season ends. Hansi Flick himself hopes to help Robert Lewandowski rediscover his scoring touch and make sure that he has the quality in him to help out next season as well. While everything is negotiable with the player, he also wishes to improve and succeed at the Catalan club.
