Former Barcelona defender Jean-Clair Todibo

Barcelona can ‘easily’ get €7 million as variables for former defender

The economic crunch being faced by FC Barcelona means that any source of income is welcome for the club. The club may receive some of this cash injection from a surprising source in France.

Jean Claire-Todibo, the former Barcelona defender is having a good season in France with OGC Nice. While he was not able to get too many chances or get a position locked in at the Catalan club, his time in France has been more productive as he has become a mainstay in Didier Digard’s Nice team.

The still-young central defender has started every game for the club since October and missed only one game only due to suspension. He is one of the pillars on which the OGC Nice team has built their hopes of securing a European competition slot, as they currently sit seventh in the league table.

Todibo has been playing particularly well in the last month, which has been recognized by the league itself as he was nominated for the player of the month award for February, along with other high performers like Kylian Mbappe of PSG and Florian Balogun of Stade de Reims. While Mbappe is the favorite to win this award, only being nominated for it shows the level at which Todibo has been playing in France this season.

These impressive performances also benefit Barcelona indirectly. As Todibo’s valuation rises with his performances, Barcelona can get a hefty chunk from a future transfer fee of the player.

According to Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona has a right to receive 20% of the player’s transfer fee, which is in addition to the €8.5 million that they received for the defender, and the €7 million they can receive in variables. The current form of the player also makes it highly likely that the Catalan club receives €7 million in variables this season.
