With its rich history of heroic deeds and trophies, FC Barcelona has been the home of some of the best players ever to play football. However, only some of its players have had the honor of being a “one club player”, i.e., spending their entire playing career at Barcelona.
Some of the names that immediately come to mind having this status are Puyol, Olivella, Biosca, Rexach, Sagi, and Verges. Melanie Serrano from the Barcelona Women’s team also spent her entire career at the Catalan club.
Sergi Roberto gave an interview to Mundo Deportivo recently, and one of the topics he had to touch upon in this interview was whether he wants to be a “one club man” and play only for Barcelona throughout his professional career. To this question, the Barcelona captain responded:
“It would be nice, but I’d like to gain some experience abroad.”
Roberto also gave further indication of a possible club that he can play for in the future:
“MLS has always intrigued me, and I’d like to explore it someday.”
MLS, and Inter Miami in particular, has been the destination of a number of FC Barcelona legends, with Lionel Messi, Sergio Busquets, and Jordi Alba all having joined the American League this summer.
In this context, Roberto was also asked in this interview whether he feels tempted to join these former teammates in Miami, to which he responded:
“I keep an eye on things, but I simply enjoy watching my friends play. We’ll see what happens in the future.”
However, for now, Roberto would rather have seen himself playing with Messi at Barcelona than playing with Messi in the MLS:
“Leo is the world’s best player, both historically and currently. Having him as a teammate again would have been a tremendous honor, besides the fact that there’s no one better than him. I’m confident that his presence would have helped us secure titles, and as a friend, it would have thrilled me.”
Thus, the upcoming years may see the current Barcelona captain also joining his former teammates and friends to play in the USA. However, currently, he would be looking to the season ahead, as he and his team start their La Liga campaign tomorrow on Sunday with a match against Getafe.
