The current first captain of FC Barcelona, Sergi Roberto, rarely comes into the spotlight. However, he had the attention of the Barcelona faithful in the last match as he scored the second goal for Barcelona against Granada, which allowed the Catalans to take one point away from this match and keep their undefeated run going.

While he played an important role in this match, the La Masia graduate is far from being the most active squad member on the pitch. Roberto’s role as a first-team captain is more pronounced this season than as a player, and this is clear from his appearance as a substitute in the last match after not having a single minute in the prior four matches.

Roberto meets Deco

On the other hand, his role as a leader and representative of the team was also highlighted recently as he undertook a meeting with the Sporting Director Deco. Mundo Deportivo reports that matters of the team and his personal situation at the club were discussed in this meeting, in which Alejandro Echevarria, an advisor at the club, was also present.

Barcelona value Roberto’s role as a representative of the team, especially because of his dedication and commitment to the club, and despite the low profile that he keeps. Up to this point in the season, Roberto has played only 224 minutes in six games and has already scored a goal. But being fully aware of his situation, Roberto knows that this is going to be his last season at the club.

Roberto’s contract not discussed in the meeting

The agenda of the meeting revolved mainly around matters related to the team, and such summits were already common, while Sergio Busquets was the captain. Roberto’s contractual situation was not addressed in this meeting, and the Catalans are not considering a renewal of his contract, which expires on 30th June.

Roberto is not going to have a lot of relevance in the coming seasons, as Barcelona are not only planning to permanently sign Joao Cancelo but will also be looking for another player to complement the Portuguese. On the other hand, the midfield is already highly congested, and Roberto will not be getting many minutes in any of these positions.
