Just when things looked like getting better for FC Barcelona, the issue of injuries and physical problems has once again reared its head to haunt the team in this decisive stretch of the season.
Pedri and Frenkie de Jong, two key midfielders for Xavi, both had to leave the last match against Athletic Club because of injuries, and both are expected to miss significant game time.
Furthermore, there is another key player for Barcelona this season who is currently not in the ideal physical conditions, i.e., Lamine Yamal.
The youngster is suffering from a knee issue, and, according to SPORT, the Barcelona technical staff is taking full precautions to ensure that the winger is able to play at his best level in the upcoming match against Napoli.
This problem kept Yamal from missing his first match this season against Getafe, which Barcelona were able to win without many problems. He also did not start against Athletic Club, but the injury to Pedri forced Xavi to introduce him onto the pitch before the end of the first half.
As things stand, Barcelona are calm in regard to Yamal’s overall situation, but the Catalans are still taking full caution, as he is one of the most decisive players in the squad, and his presence will be a significant factor if Xavi’s team is to progress from the Round of 16.
Ferran Torres is currently in the last phases of his recovery and can start training in the coming days. He can be an option for Xavi if he decides to rest Yamal for the Mallorca game, which is scheduled before the Napoli game, although Yamal’s availability is not in doubt for this match.
But no one can doubt that the 16-year-old is a key player for Xavi, and the trainer will be hoping to have one of his most potent weapons available in his arsenal against Napoli.
