The summer transfer window closed only two weeks ago, in which the club brought several reinforcements. However, FC Barcelona are once again looking at the market to further bolster their squad in the coming days.
One of the main areas that the club feels to be in need of reinforcements is the midfield pivot. Currently, only Oriol Romeu is available to play in this position. While Frenkie de Jong or Ilkay Gundogan can cover for Romeu in emergency situations, this is not their best position.
Thus, SPORT reports that the Catalans are keeping an eye on several players to get coverage for Romeu. Two of these players can come as free agents, and thus are suitable options for Barcelona, considering their current economic woes.
The free agents are Jean Philippe Gbamin and Joshua Guilavogui. The former is a 27-year-old midfielder who has trained with the French national team in the junior categories but is still eligible to play for the senior Ivorian team. He has played with Mainz for three seasons, with Everton for four seasons, and spent the last season on loan at Trabzonspor.
The other player is Joshua Guilavogui, who has already played in La Liga. The midfielder was a part of the 2013-14 Atletico Madrid squad which went on to win the league title on the last day. Since then, he has been playing for Wolfsburg and also has had a loan spell at Bourdeaux.
Guilavogio is currently 32 years old, and possibly already has his best years behind him. However, he can still be a considerable option for Barcelona, as he is a free agent and would not require too high wages if he were to move to the Catalan capital.
While not the most exciting of options in the market, these footballers can still prove to be somewhat helpful for Barcelona in the short term, as the financial realities at the club force its hand from pursuing more known footballers in winter.
