It was definitely the intention of FC Barcelona to bolster their squad as much as possible during the summer. Last season’s disappointments are not something they wanted to repeat this time around, so it was naturally a good idea to invest in signings. Unfortunately, Barcelona have ultimately managed to improve very little in that regard.
While the arrival of Dani Olmo is one that does add a lot of offensive quality to the team, as shown by his display in the recent victory over Rayo Vallecano, there are other aspects of the team that also needed an upgrade or two. One position where the club continues to lack depth is the center-back role.
When every player is fit and available for action, it does not stand out as much as it is doing right now due to various injuries. The likes of Ronald Araujo, Andreas Christensen, and Eric Garcia are all currently sidelined due to their unique problems. That is why, in recent days, a lot of links have been created between Barcelona and a certain Jonathan Tah.
The 28-year-old German defender who plays for Bayer Leverkusen continues to be the defender that Barcelona are being heavily linked to. However, according to Toni Juanmarti, the interest in Tah is genuine from Barcelona but the club is not exactly focused on an immediate signing.
As it stands, the problems with Financial Fairplay continue to be frustrating for the club and they limit the kind of access that the club has to bring in new arrivals. In Tah’s case, however, Barcelona want to definitely bring him in but they will look to do so either in the upcoming winter transfer window or the next summer.
Yet, they are simultaneously aware of the interest from Bayern Munich as well. If the German defender ultimately ends up managing to avoid Bayern’s grasp, Barcelona will look to sign him in the upcoming transfer windows for either a very low cost or on a potential free transfer.
Barcelona did, however, try to entertain the signing this summer but the right circumstances did not match up. With their extremely vulnerable state of Financial Fairplay, the Catalan club simply cannot even think to bring in and register the defender with La Liga.
