A position that demands their attention, particularly due to the departure of Sergio Busquets, there have been a handful of names that could possibly fill that void.
Despite La Blaugrana failing to incorporate other top priority options due to extensive financial restrictions and limitations, Barcelona are still hoping to bring in a new recruit that can lead the side from the pivot position at least in the short run if a long-term signing is unable to be signed.
According to information that has been provided by Spanish outlet SPORT, FC Barcelona have come to a consensus amongst their higher-ups regarding Girona’s midfielder Oriol Romeu being their priority option to reinforce the pivot position.
The former La Masia player has been instrumental for Girona this season as they finished in 10th in La Liga Santander following the conclusion of the 2022/2023 Spanish season. At the peak of his powers right now, if Barcelona are able to secure his signing, there is potential in him to become a very underrated yet impressive signing once he gets integrated into the team.
To bring him to Barca however, the Catalan club will need to pay up close to his €8 million release clause.
While negotiations continue and Barcelona continue to try to reduce that valuation, the Catalan club is otherwise willing to offer Girona with a deal worth €4 million in fixed payments and an additional €4 million in variables, but it remains to be seen what Girona sees fit.
It remains to be seen how soon Barcelona are able to finalize this operation now that they have indeed come to the decision regarding Romeu being their preferred choice, but speculation suggests within a week’s time or near to it the 31-year-old could end up being a Barca player.
