While nothing is certain for now, the plans of FC Barcelona regarding their defensive structure for the next season are already taking shape.

The Catalans want to go into the next season with four top center-backs, and one of these center-backs will be Chadi Riad, who is currently playing for Real Betis. Barcelona will exercise their buyback option of €7 million once the Verdiblancos pay €3.5 million for him next summer.

Chadi Riad’s imminent arrival will bolster Barcelona’s defensive options, crowding the center-back position with five adept players: Jules Kounde, Ronald Araujo, Andreas Christensen, Inigo Martinez, and the incoming Moroccan talent. Consequently, Barcelona may consider parting ways with one of these defenders to balance the squad.

In addition to these defenders, Barcelona also have Eric Garcia on their books, who will return from his loan at Girona at the end of the season. However, according to SPORT, the club has decided to part ways with Garcia when he returns from loan.

The Spaniard had to leave Barcelona last summer, as it was becoming increasingly apparent that he would not be getting a lot of minutes under Xavi. The Barcelona head coach wanted him to stay, but the defender decided to leave for Michel’s side, and the current season has only justified his decision.

Garcia is an undisputed starter for Michel and has played an important part in getting his team to the top of the table with Real Madrid. His performances with Girona can also pave his way back to the Spanish international team.

Garcia is now valued at €15 million, and while other clubs are also interested in him, Girona would be delighted to keep him beyond the current loan.

The defender himself is also happy at Girona, and he can permanently join Girona if they qualify for the UEFA Champions League.
