FC Barcelona are reportedly getting nearer to their priority right-back, Joao Cancelo, and the club can have a new right-back in its squad in the coming days. This would definitely be good news for Xavi and the club, as they have been pursuing Cancelo throughout the summer.

Cancelo’s experience and skills would undoubtedly enhance Xavi’s team, which has been suffering from a lack of a natural and competent right-back for the last few years.

Ivan Fresneda’s arrival now difficult

However, the news of Cancelo’s arrival would not be good for everyone. One individual whose interests would be negatively impacted by Cancelo’s transfer to Barcelona is another right-back, Ivan Fresneda, who was also linked with the club throughout this summer, and who also wants to play for the Blaugrana in the coming season.

Barcelona were previously aiming to get Fresneda – who is one of the favorites of Deco – first and then go into the market for Cancelo as this would have given them the security of having a right-back even if they miss out on Cancelo.

If Cancelo was signed in such a scenario, Fresneda would have been sent on loan to allow him to grow and develop further.

However, the costs of Cancelo’s loan make it difficult for Barcelona to bring both these players to the Catalan capital this summer. As SPORT has reported, Fresneda’s acquisition is becoming increasingly difficult, and Cancelo’s arrival would completely rule out his signing.

Chelsea another suitor for Fresneda

Fresneda had a great first season in La Liga with Real Valladolid, and his performances mean Barcelona is not the only team interested in him. Another big club interested in the youngster is the Premier League side Chelsea, who can sign the player and send him on loan this summer.

Real Valladolid would also prefer a transfer of their in-demand player to Chelsea, as the English club will pay a higher amount for the youngster than Barcelona. The Catalans had already submitted an €8 million offer for Fresneda, which was rejected by Valladolid.

Thus, the possible arrival of Cancelo and the interest of Chelsea means that Fresneda’s future may lie away from the Camp Nou.
