The speculations of Barcelona looking to swoop into the center-back market in the January Transfer window after Blaugrana legend Gerard Pique bid a final farewell to his childhood club have been on a rise.
The empty spot left was earlier deemed to be replaced by the Bilbao Veteran, Inigo Martinez in the winter, keeping in mind how badly injuries have hampered our season for the worse.
The seasoned Spaniard defender’s contract extension is up in the air, with his contract expiring in the summer of 2023, and a verbal agreement is supposedly in place already over a free transfer.
The Camp Nou-based side also weighed upon the option of a possible signing in the winter window, if he was available for a reasonable price. However, recent reports from the outlet Mundo Deportivo suggest that the move might be stalled for the time being.
The primary reason is the current form of Marcos Alonso. Arriving from the London Blues in the summer of 2022, the experienced 31-year-old Spaniard has seen more game time as a center-back than his favored Left Fullback/Wingback position, and he’s been more than reliable.
In the previous outing, Alonso proved his capabilities and announced that he is here to give it his all, making crucial blocks and interceptions while being good in the build-up which made sure that the Garnet and the blue make a comeback after being a man and a goal down after only 31 minutes.
The coaching staff are all very happy regarding his performance and reliability, which is being rewarded with a possible renewal for 2 more years.
The arrival of any more center-backs in the winter market is very vague at the moment, although the Catalan club will monitor the market for beneficial transfers, but most likely the recruitment will happen next summer as Barcelona look to bolster other areas.
