In addition to bringing some players to bolster the squad for the next season, another important objective for FC Barcelona in the upcoming summer transfer window is to finalize the departure of a number of fringe players.
These sales are necessary for the club to meet the FFP requirements of the league and make space in their wage bill for new signings. In this regard, the club has already undertaken significant work and is already reaching the conclusion for the first sale of the summer. Notable progress has already been achieved in the sale for one player.
This player in question is the center back Clement Lenglet, who is close to finalizing his transfer to the Premier League side Tottenham Hotspurs. SPORT reports that the agreement between the two clubs is quite close and can be signed as soon as the next week.
Lenglet has been playing at Tottenham for the last season, but he is in London only on a loan. The player has been impressive in this loan stint, and the London side is satisfied with his performance.
Barcelona have already signed Inigo Martinez and thus are keen to sell Lenglet, as he is no longer needed at the club. Previously, the transfer to Tottenham was not progressing because the two sides could not arrive at a mutually acceptable transfer fee.
However, Barcelona can compromise in their valuation of the player at this time. The club was previously asking the London side for €12 million but might be tempted to sell him only for half this amount, as his departure would also result in savings of around €18 million in wages.
The Frenchman’s current contract runs till 2026, however, he has been surplus to requirements at the club for a couple of seasons now. Thus, Barcelona would be willing to sell him as soon as possible, and Tottenham have provided them with a good opportunity this summer.
