FC Barcelona have most of their first-team players currently away from the club on international duties. Most of these players are playing for national teams in Europe and South America.

One of the players playing with a South American team is the defender Ronald Araujo, who is an important part of Marcelo Bielsa’s Uruguay squad.

As SPORT has reported, the Barcelona defender was one of the players who stood out in his team’s last match against Colombia, as both these teams are trying to qualify for the next World Cup in 2026.

Uruguay dominant but ineffective

The match between the two teams ended in a 2-2 draw, but Uruguay could well have lost this match if it was not for a last-minute penalty converted by the Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez.

Uruguay were the dominant team on the pitch, in accordance with Bielsa’s philosophy, but were mostly ineffective and also suffered because of the quick counter-attacks launched by the Colombians.

Uruguay equalising in the last moments

Colombia took the lead in the match after the former Real Madrid forward, James Rodriguez, scored the opener. Uruguay responded in the second half as they scored the equalizer from a set piece. The goal was finished by Matias Olivera, but the Barcelona defender was also involved in this play.

However, the match did not calm down with the scores equalized, and after having several chances, Columbia scored another goal when Mathias Uribe scored from inside the box.

Lastly, with everyone expecting Uruguay to lose the match, the Columbia goalkeeper gave away a penalty which was converted by Darwin Nunez, to draw the match.

Ronald Araujo played the full ninety minutes in this match and will be once again hoping to get back on the pitch as Uruguay play Brazil in Montevideo this coming Wednesday.
