FC Barcelona have had to endure defensive fragilities in recent years due to a lackluster depth. Many times over the past the Catalan giants have had to face humiliations as a consequence of it. However, at this point in time, the central defenders are one aspect of the Barcelona squad that there can not be any complaints against.

Four primary protagonists now fight for those two particular positions. Uruguayan warrior Ronald Araujo and Frenchman Jules Kounde now possess the quality and backup of Andreas Christensen and Inigo Martinez. Once the primary concern for Barcelona, the defense is now Xavi’s first sense of security.

However, as highlighted by SPORT, Christensen could be the one defender that now faces the most competition. Having been a consistent starter for Barça this season, the new arrivals coupled with the seasoned stars could leave the Dane behind.

While Jules Kounde and Ronald Araujo both are already guaranteed starters within the team, Christensen and Inigo Martinez are still in contention to fight for places. Last season, with Kounde occupying the fullback slot, Christensen was allowed significant game time.

However, with Joao Cancelo now occupying that position, the central defenders only have two places to fight for. One of them, on the left, is primarily the spot that Christensen and Inigo contend for. Yet, due to his proficiency with his left foot, Martinez could now take over that from the Danish defender.

The coming games could hence be important for the 27-year-old Danish defender. Proving his worth to Xavi Hernandez will lead to more game time and prominence. However, a failure to do so could lead to him losing his place to three other defenders that occupy the same position as his.
