FC Barcelona have not been able to retain their form from last season when they won the league title with some matches to spare. With Atletico Madrid’s victory over Sevilla in their last match, the Catalans are currently placed fourth in La Liga, trailing Girona, Real Madrid, and Atletico Madrid on the table.

However, when seen from the perspective of a calendar year, Barcelona’s performance is still the best in Spain, according to records analyzed by Mundo Deportivo.

Xavi’s men have accumulated 88 total points in forty games in 2023. Atletico Madrid also accumulated the same number of points, but Barcelona came out on top in all three encounters between these two teams, clearly showing the superiority of the Blaugranes over the Mattress Makers.

Barcelona started the year playing on matchday 16 of La Liga 2022-23 and ended it on matchday 18 of the 2023-24 season. In these forty matches, Barcelona won 27, drew 7, and lost another 7. Xavi’s men scored 70 goals while conceding one-half of these goals, i.e. 35.

Atletico Madrid had the same number of wins, draws, and losses in 2023, but scored 13 more goals than Barcelona. At the same time, they also conceded 3 more goals than the Catalans.

Real Madrid stand third in this ranking, as they accumulated 85 points in 2023, i.e. 3 points less than Barcelona and Atletico. The Merengues had one victory less and one defeat more than the formerly mentioned sides.

Girona’s great La Liga run has also brought them in contention with the traditional Spanish giants, as they stand fourth in this ranking.

They got 77 points in 2023, putting them ahead of other teams like Real Sociedad, Real Betis, and Athletic Club, who follow Girona on the fifth, sixth, and seventh positions with 73, 63, and 61 points respectively.
