Endeavoring the transfer market relentlessly, FC Barcelona are not giving up in their chase for new arrivals this summer. As much as finances have proven to be a thorn in the side, the club continues to monitor viable options, with the intention of fortifying the squad ahead of next season.
After completing Vitor Roque’s highly anticipated signing, Barcelona have now set their sights in the midfield department. Despite completing Gundogan’s signing on a free transfer as well, the Catalans have found themselves eyeing Liverpool’s Thiago Alcantara.
According to SPORT, Liverpool’s newfound insistence to let Thiago leave for an affordable amount has put Barcelona on alert. Joan Laporta explained in an interview that “we will reinforce ourselves with a full-back and two midfielders.”
The Catalans’ search for a midfielder ties in with the links with Thiago. While Barcelona have shown interest in a number of players this summer, the feasibility of the operation often tends to fall flat due to strained finances.
However, owing to Liverpool’s two new signings of Szobozlai and Mac Allister in midfield, the possibility of acquiring a 32-year-old fringe asset with only one year left on his contract is certainly on the cards. Such low-cost deals particularly appeal to Barcelona.
On a sporting level, the Spanish midfielder is reported to be a perfect fit for Xavi’s new box midfield module. Slotting in as a pivot as well as an advanced midfielder, he has the guile to offer security in possession. After all, the veteran was once the face of La Masia’s youth prospects and plied his trade with Xavi back in the day.
For now, the player is seen focussing on Liverpool’s forthcoming pre-season journey. However, any movements by Barcelona cannot be ruled out as they scavenge the market for exciting opportunities.
