The upcoming summer transfer window will be a major event for FC Barcelona. Having to go through a season where they have already faced several injuries already, Barcelona will have to make adequate decisions in order to reinforce their team properly in the summer.
However, their economic restrictions continue to be a massive problem. Unlikely to have access to blockbuster signings, they will need to be smart with their business. Among their many objectives, the recruitment of a new left-back is among the priorities.
Lack of alternatives
As it currently stands, the quality in their fullback depth is concerning. Alejandro Balde remains undisputed as a starter, but no replacement apart from him is reassuring. While it is true that Joao Cancelo is capable of playing there, he is engaged in another position for now.
Moreover, Cancelo’s time at FC Barcelona is not exactly guaranteed either. Only available for a year on a loan deal, he will return to Manchester City in the summer. Unless Barcelona manages to permanently sign him, they can not exactly count on his continuity.
A young bet for Barcelona
For this reason, as reported by Spanish outlet SPORT, Barcelona have an alternative in mind. Ian Maatsen, 21-year-old, is a Chelsea left-back that La Blaugrana is keeping an eye on. Having joined the London-based club in 2019, he has not exactly managed to cement himself there as a regular.
With three loan moves to Charlton Athletic, Coventry, and Burnley already under his belt, he is struggling with Chelsea. Currently, a renewal is being discussed despite the lack of his participation.
Intent on leaving
However, SPORT believes that he will definitely look for a way out instead. With his contract expiring in the summer of 2024, he would be available as a free agent. Currently valued at €20 million, a free-of-cost signing at his valuation would be great for Barcelona.
The Dutch fullback is also capable of playing as a winger. His technical abilities and offensive characteristics are what have attracted Barcelona in the first place according to SPORT. While there are other positions being considered as well, Barcelona considers Ian a great ‘bargain’ should the opportunity present itself.
