Barcelona eyeing Man City and Tottenham stars as Xavi wants a creative midfielder

Lionel Messi was one of the main targets for FC Barcelona in this summer transfer window. However, negotiations between the Catalan club and their most iconic legend did not go exactly as planned, and the Argentine has now joined the MLS side Inter Miami.

Xavi was desiring a reunion with Messi not only because of the status of the Argentine star and their personal relationship but was more specifically looking for his ability to play the final pass. Now that the option of Messi is no longer a possibility, Xavi still wants Laporta to get a player with a killer final pass in the squad.

According to Diario AS, Bernardo Silva and Giovanni Lo Celso are two of the players that the Catalans have identified for this role. Signing Silva is almost impossible this summer unless Barcelona can sell one of their high-profile players.

The Portuguese superstar has been linked with Barcelona for a number of years now, but his improving performances have increasingly put him away from the Blaugranes’ reach.

Signing Lo Celso has more chances of success, but would still not be easy for the Catalans. Barcelona and Tottenham currently have very good relations, as the Premier League side is set to play against the Catalans in the Joan Gamper trophy, and is also negotiating to purchase Clement Lenglet. Additionally, Lo Celso would also be cheaper than Bernardo Silva.

There was a clear lack of creativity at Barcelona during the last season, as midfielders contributed only 21 assists to the team. Gavi gave seven assists last season, Busquets and De Jong gave four, Kessie gave three, Pablo Torre gave two, and Pedri gave only one assist.

Gundogan had seven assists for Manchester City last season, but Xavi is looking for another creative player in this window, especially if he is to continue with a four-man midfield this season. Both these options would be significant improvements for the Barcelona squad, but Lo Celso looks like a more realistic option for now.
