Although he has started the 2024-25 season in blazing fashion and is expected to be one of the key players for FC Barcelona as they once again look to compete for the highest trophies in Europe and Spain, the Blaugranes are still already planning for life after Robert Lewandowski.
The Pole is already 36 years of age and has only one year left on his current contract. While he is highly likely to get a one-year extension automatically, Barcelona will still have to look for a player who can be his long-term replacement in the squad, especially after their failed Vitor Roque experiment.
For this purpose, one of the players that has been linked with the Catalan club is the Lille striker, Jonathan David. The €45m-rated Canadian player has proven himself to be a highly reliable striker, and has already scored eight goals and provided two assists in 14 matches this season.
However, the fact that makes him even more alluring for top clubs across Europe is that his contract is ending with Lille at the end of this season, and he has already made it clear that he is not going to renew it. Thus, he is emerging as one of the most in-demand strikers for the next summer transfer window.
Thus, Barcelona are naturally interested in him, but as Fichajes has reported, the Catalans are going to face significant competition for his signing, at least from two sides in particular.
One of these two sides is Juventus, who have already established contacts with the player’s agents to get an idea about the costs that his move to Turin will incur. The striker himself has shown a desire to play in the Serie A.
But Juventus also face competition for David’s signing from within Italy, as Inter Milan are also keeping an eye on the player, and can take their pursuit a notch up in the coming days.
Meanwhile, Barcelona are also sending signals to express their interest in the forward, but with such competition for his signing, it is highly uncertain where he will be playing for the next season.
