FC Barcelona are no stranger to fateful encounters, but it is always interesting to revisit such encounters. The latest of such incidents recently occurred in the La Liga outing between Xavi’s Barca and Jose Luis Mendilibar’s Sevilla at the Montjuic Stadium.

One of the biggest attractions in this game was the presence of Real Madrid legend Sergio Ramos, who has returned to Sevilla to represent his former team. His appearance against Barcelona brings back many nostalgic occurrences as well as the knowledge that his quality could hurt Barcelona at any point.

The fateful interview

However, prior to the game itself, Ramos claimed in an interview that he wished to score his first goal back for Sevilla against FC Barcelona and stated that he even had a celebration ready in case he managed to do so against his former El Clasico rivals.

How it happened

Ironically, as highlighted by Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo, Ramos would in fact end up scoring a goal in the match but it would be in the direction of his own goalkeeper’s net. In a moment of urgency, Ferran Torres whipped in a cross towards Lamine Yamal in the 76th minute of an intensely contested game, and the 16-year-old would attempt to head it towards the path of a well-positioned Fermin Lopez.

However, what followed was nothing short of fateful chaos. Instead of reaching the desired target, the ball came crashing down into the path of a retreating Sergio Ramos and then trickled away from his own leg into the Sevilla goal.

An unlikely hero for Barcelona

Being the only goal of the 1-0 victory for Barca, it would ironically be Ramos himself who scored and then gave all three points to FC Barcelona. Football is ultimately a sport that can be quite cruel to its players, and perhaps Ramos was just the latest of targets that faced the blunt side of its axe this time around.

The Real Madrid legend will want to forget this encounter altogether while Barcelona themselves will be looking to cherish it. The next match to keep an eye out on now will be Real Madrid’s clash against Girona at the Estadi Montilivi, a clash that will dictate how the top of the La Liga table looks like at the end of this week.
