Barcelona gain €2.5 million in wage margin as defender leaves on loan for PSV

FC Barcelona have concluded the operation for offloading another fringe player as they announced today that Sergino Dest has joined PSV Eindhoven on a season-long loan. This successful operation was particularly needed, as Barcelona still have to free up some space on their wage bill to register some of their players, while they also look to sign new players as well.

This will be Dest’s second season that he spends on loan at another club, as he returned only this summer from the loan to AC Milan. Now playing in the country of his birth, Dest will be looking to regain the form that he showed when he last played in the Netherlands with Ajax.

How much wage margin will Dest’s loan free up?

The main area of concern for Barcelona and its followers from Dest’s departure to PSV Eindhoven is the extent to which his exit will help the club register its players, as Dest was not going to have much sporting importance under Xavi anyway.

The USA international has left Barcelona for a season-long loan, after which PSV will have the option to buy him for €10 million, but this option is not mandatory. The official figures about his transfer have not been released, but it is known that Barcelona will pay 50% of the player’s wages, while PSV will pay the rest of his salary.

As SPORT has reported, Dest currently has a wage of €10 million gross, and if PSV were paying his full salary, his departure would have freed up €5 million from Barcelona’s wage bill. However, as the Catalans still have to pay one-half of his salary, Barcelona would free up only €2.5 million, which can be used to register other players.

Can Barcelona register more players with this loan?

It is not yet clear whether this wage margin obtained from the departure of Sergino Dest to PSV will allow Barcelona to register another player. The club is currently prioritizing the registration of Marcos Alonso, especially as Ronald Araujo is out with an injury, and the Barcelona backline is getting thinner.

Barcelona are now working on the sale of Clement Lenglet, and as the Frenchman has a significantly higher wage currently, his departure would further facilitate the registration of new players by the Catalan club.
